It included a restaurant called Windows on the World, a smaller restaurant called Wild Blue, a bar called The Greatest Bar on Earth, and rooms for private functions. Developed by restaurateur Joe Baum and designed initially by Warren Platner, Windows on the World occupied 50, 000 square feet (4, 600 m²) of space in the North Tower. The restaurants opened on April 19, 1976, and were destroyed in the September 11, 2001, attacks. [1] Operations [ edit] Interior of Windows on the World on November 4, 1999 The main dining room faced north and east, allowing guests to look out onto the skyline of Manhattan. The dress code required jackets for men and was strictly enforced; a man who arrived with a reservation but without a jacket was seated at the bar. The restaurant offered jackets that were loaned to the patrons so they could eat in the main dining room. [2] A more intimate dining room, Wild Blue, was located on the south side of the restaurant. The bar extended along the south side of 1 World Trade Center as well as the corner over part of the east side. Looking out from the bar through the full length windows, one could see views of the southern tip of Manhattan, where the Hudson and East Rivers meet. In addition, one could see the Liberty State Park with Ellis Island and Staten Island with the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The kitchens, utility and conference spaces for the restaurant were located on the 106th floor. Windows on the World closed after the 1993 bombing, in which employee Wilfredo Mercado was killed while checking in deliveries in the building's underground garage. It underwent a US$25 million renovation and reopened in 1996. [3] [4] In 2000, its final full year of operation, it reported revenues of US$37 million, making it the highest-grossing restaurant in the United States. [5] The executive chefs of Windows on the World included Philippe Feret of Brasserie Julien; the last chef was Michael Lomonaco. September 11 attacks [ edit] Windows on the World was destroyed when the North Tower collapsed during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. That morning, the restaurant was hosting regular breakfast patrons and the Risk Waters Financial Technology Congress. [6] World Trade Center lessor Larry Silverstein was regularly holding breakfast meetings in Windows on the World with tenants as part of his recent acquisition of the Twin Towers from the Port Authority, and was scheduled to be in the restaurant on the morning of the attacks. However, his wife insisted he go to a dermatologist's appointment that morning, [7] whereby he avoided death. Everyone present in the restaurant when American Airlines Flight 11 penetrated the North Tower perished that day, as all means of escape and evacuation (including the stairwells and elevators leading to below the impact zone) were instantly cut off. Victims trapped in Windows on the World died either from smoke inhalation from the fire, jumping or falling from the building to their deaths, or the eventual collapse of the North Tower 102 minutes later. There were 72 restaurant staff present in the restaurant, including acting manager Christine Anne Olender, whose desperate calls to Port Authority police represented the restaurant's final communications. [8] 16 Incisive Media -Risk Waters Group employees, and 76 other guests/contractors were also present. [9] After about 9:40 AM, no further distress calls from the restaurant were made. The last people to leave the restaurant before Flight 11 collided with the North Tower at 8:46 AM were Michael Nestor, Liz Thompson, Geoffrey Wharton, and Richard Tierney. They departed at 8:44 AM and survived the attack. [10] Critical review [ edit] In its last iteration, Windows on the World received mixed reviews. Ruth Reichl, a New York Times food critic, said in December 1996 that "nobody will ever go to Windows on the World just to eat, but even the fussiest food person can now be content dining at one of New York's favorite tourist destinations. " She gave the restaurant two out of four stars, signifying a "very good" quality rather than "excellent" (three stars) or "extraordinary" (four stars). [11] In his 2009 book Appetite, William Grimes wrote that "At Windows, New York was the main course. " [12] In 2014, Ryan Sutton of compared the now-destroyed restaurant's cuisine to that of its replacement, One World Observatory. He stated, "Windows helped usher in a new era of captive audience dining in that the restaurant was a destination in itself, rather than a lazy byproduct of the vital institution it resided in. " [13] Cultural impact and legacy [ edit] Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund was organized soon after the attacks to provide support and services to the families of those in the food, beverage, and hospitality industries who had been killed on September 11 in the World Trade Center. Windows on the World executive chef Michael Lomonaco and owner-operator David Emil were among the founders of that fund. It has been speculated that The Falling Man, a famous photograph of a man dressed in white falling headfirst on September 11, was an employee at Windows on the World. Although his identity has never been conclusively established, he was believed to be Jonathan Briley, an audio technician at the restaurant. [14] On March 30, 2005, the novel Windows on the World, by Frédéric Beigbeder, was released. The novel focuses on two brothers, aged 7 and 9 years, who are in the restaurant with their dad Carthew Yorsten. The novel starts at 8:29 AM (just before the plane hits the tower) and tells about every event on every following minute, ending at 10:30 AM, just after the collapse. Published in 2012, Kenneth Womack 's novel The Restaurant at the End of the World offers a fictive recreation of the lives of the staff and visitors at the Windows on the World complex on the morning of September 11. On January 4, 2006, a number of former Windows on the World staff opened Colors, a co-operative restaurant in Manhattan that serves as a tribute to their colleagues and whose menu reflects the diversity of the former Windows' staff. That original restaurant closed, but its founders' umbrella organization, Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, continues its mission, including at Colors restaurants in New York and other cities. Windows on the World was planned to reopen on the top floors of the new One World Trade Center, when the tower completed; however, on March 7, 2011, it was cancelled because of cost concerns and other troubles finding support for the project. Google Docs For working across platforms and sharing documents Cross-platform Integrates with Google Drive Mobile apps available Formatting issues Quirky If you work collaboratively, or switch between a PC and a Mac, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides should be your first port of call. For anyone who's already deep into the Android/Google ecosystem, this suite will be a natural choice. The three key tools run happily in any web browser, and are available as mobile apps for Apple and Android devices. Google's free office suite doesn't offer the advanced tools you'll find in desktop software like LibreOffice (there are no pivot tables, for example, and there's no database tool) but everything is laid out in a clear, logical way and all your files will be saved and synced automatically so you don't have to worry about transfers and backups. The chief disadvantage of Docs, Sheets and Slides is that opening files created using other office software is a cumbersome process and file formatting isn't is always converted properly. Windows on the World, despite the fact that it takes place in the weeks following the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, is a film that is urgently for our time. It is a hero's journey of a son trying to find his father in that grief-stricken landscape and the characters stand in for the millions of immigrants, legal and illegal, who contribute in their everyday lives, to the American landscape. The film seeks to counter the narrative that's all-too-prevalent in today's political and media landscape by telling a story set in America's biggest and most diverse city, at its darkest time. The script by playwright and novelist Robert Mailer Anderson (who also produced the film) is wise and completely engaging; he creates indelible characters who are ultimately inspiring and uplifting. Edward James Olmos gives what he considers to be the performance of a lifetime, and the rest of the cast is terrific as well-with a special shout-out to Glynn Turman. The direction, by Olmos's son Michael, is sure-handed, getting terrific performances from his cast, including his father, in this father-son story, and it's beautifully lensed. The music, including jazz and a title track written by Anderson, is pitch-perfect, supporting the story without getting in the way. This film should be seen by everybody-and I'm sure it will be in mainstream distribution soon, as this is a time when, although the major studios may have turned their backs on substance, terrific indie films like this one have many other possible venues. If you can't see it at a film festival, like I did, keep a keen eye out for it. Terrific and inspiring.

I was expecting an absurd comedy. This was not a comedy, although I did laugh twice. Without any real character development, motivations or purpose. The entire premise of a guys obsession for a jacket feels extremely forced. Watching, I always felt conscious of the scriptwriting process. All plot turns felt very forced. It honestly seemed like Quentin had taken a random bizarre idea, and tried to brainstorm ways to make it work across genres, in an arthouse package.
Its an offbeat mixed genre cocktail that seems to suffer from an identity crisis. Comedy, Horror, drama, arthouse - but in trying to cross all genres just fails to have anything compelling about it. Not funny, clever, deep or exciting in anyway unfortunately.
Dupieux has a strong visual style, the cinematography is well done. and Dujardin is excellent at whatever he touches, but he shouldn't have touched this script. The whole movie really missed the mark for me.
I give it 5/10 because on paper it has everything I like. a strong visual style, quirky premise and fantastic lead man in Jean Dujardin. but unfortunately putting all the elements together was the most disappointing flaw for me.
I feel that watching "bad" movies can often be the most educational in evolving as a filmmaker and I look forward to see what Dupieux learns from his mistakes in this below average film.

Many early first ladies expressed their own preference for how they were addressed, including the use of such titles as "Lady", "Mrs. President" and "Mrs. Presidentress"; Martha Washington was often referred to as "Lady Washington. Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw may have been published in 1898, but at its core is a matrix of terrors and uncertainties that have never fallen out of fashion. Its sly manipulation of truth, illusion, and subtext inspired an entire critical and literary discourse predicated in part on whether these ghostly phenomena were “real” or a figment of the governess’s hyperactive imagination. Which is to say that the meaning of The Turn of the Screw has tended to rest on whether the governess herself is to be believed—a question that has always revealed as much about the text as it does about the reader, all the more so in 2020, when the air is thick with calls to believe women. The Turning, Floria Sigismondi ’s new take on this old story, cuts down on some of this built-in ambiguity and moral tension—for better and worse. It stars Mackenzie Davis as the governess, Kate, with Finn Wolfhard and Brooklynn Prince appearing (respectively) as Miles and Flora, Kate’s young charges. Let’s start by saying this much: the casting is strange. Wolfhard—star of two fizzy, nostalgic megahits: Stranger Things and the It movies—has somehow become an avatar of 1980s cool geeks... which probably flatters said now-culturally-dominant geeks, but I won’t argue. Prince, meanwhile, is the mischievously bubbly and unpredictable young star of 2017’s The Florida Project. Neither is an obvious candidate for the creepy-child antics befitting a horror movie. But their presence, along with that of the wonderful Barbara Marten as stern, spooky housekeeper Mrs. Grose, is also one of the hidden and too-rare pleasures of The Turning. The kids are alright. Their energy is at times surprising. The movie’s buffet of jump scares, by contrast, are mostly the opposite: dull, rushed, and unsurprising—a shame, given the genre. A foggy horror film set on a lakeside estate has something of a leg up when it comes to drudging up atmosphere. This comparison is rigged, but for a master class on the subject, see Jack Clayton’s The Innocents, a 1961 adaptation of the same James novella—only with a script penned with gothic panache by Truman Capote, innovative widescreen trickery by way of cinematographer Freddie Francis, and the brazen holy terror of the great Deborah Kerr. (Like I said: comparison is not fair. ) The Turning, with its conspicuous lens flares, awkward digital zooms, and slipshod editing, creeps a little too frequently into screensaver territory and suffers for it—comparison or no. The script, penned by The Conjuring ’s Chad and Carey W. Hayes, can’t seem to make up its mind about whether to openly pathologize Kate (there’s an aggravatingly obvious suggestion of inherited mental illness, for example) or to instead double down on the uncertainties that really make this story, which demands psychological rigor, tick. But all is not awry. Somehow, a James novella whose subtext has been debated for over a century has been rendered almost free of subtext—and it sort of works. The ghosts: folks, they’re really ghosts. And the sexual weirdness implied by James—there’s always been something off about Miles’s familiarity with the governess, and the kids’ screaming denials of seeing the ghosts still make you wonder if what really haunts them is unspoken trauma—gets literalized, here. It’s this —not the spooks in the mirror, but the hints of something unspeakable—that gets under your skin. This is what works. I won’t spoil the backstory, but some of this material appears up front: a mannequin whose breasts Miles has defaced with sewing pins; a surprising pair of scenes in which Kate is groped by a ghost and later witnesses—sort of—a sexual assault. This winds up being one of the more vibrant threads in the movie. For years, scholars and critics have suggested that the governess’s visions of a handsome ghost and his maybe-lover are evidence of the governess needing a good “screw. ” People with have suggested this. Sigismondi’s movie is wise, I think, to instead heighten the outright sexual terror—rather than desire—of it all. Unlike some adaptations, her film smartly throws the question of whether the governess is to be believed out the window. At its best, the movie’s hysteria gets so feverish and jumpy that it all feels like it’s simply playing out in Kate’s mind, which it very well could be, justifying the sense that whether what’s happening at Bly is real, for Kate, it’s all real. This is where the movie benefits from the casting of poised-as-ever Davis, ready like usual to make us curious about the woman she plays. The Turning ultimately dims its good ideas with choices that either don’t make sense or don’t make a difference, like setting this story in the ‘90s (signaled early on by way of Kurt Cobain’s death). There’s also a funny thread in which the woman Kate lives with back home—Kate’s only intimate relationship beyond Bly, besides her ties to her institutionalized mother—refers to herself as Kate’s “roommate. ” (I’m rooting for them. ) This soup of awkward choices has a way of making the film feel a little half-baked—as does the ending, which has surely been designed to provoke whining over its head-scratching lack of hard conclusions. This part, I liked; I dig a crash landing. Go big or go home, is the presiding, infallible logic—unless, that is, your home is Bly manor.
