September 18, 2017 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Although I have never read any of Linsey Lanier's full length mysteries featuring Miranda Steele, I felt obligated to read a few of the blurbs on these full length books' Amazon pages to get a better idea about the character before writing this review. Miranda is a woman who, as the full-length series begin, is looking for her missing daughter. Lanier attempts to explain what originally happened to Miranda in "The Day It Happened, " billed as a "short story" prequel to the full-length series. While “The Day It Happened” is certainly short and fairly well written, this work would be hard to classify it as a story in the traditional sense. Lanier’s protagonist Miranda is a woman who, as "The Day It Happened" begins, is stuck in an abusive marriage with a cop who has very good connections to protect him from any legal repercussions for what he might do. Before the story begins, Miranda has the misfortune of being raped and becoming pregnant, which does not sit well with her husband. Shortly after the baby is born, the husband inflicts about as sadistic a punishment as possible on Miranda and she winds up literally out in the cold on her own. Lanier is a skilled writer, and she does a good job in “Day” of creating an empathetic main character in Miranda and letting readers in on the thought processes of an abused woman. From what I’ve learned on the subject of such abuse, the author’s description of what occurs seems quite accurate and the events described, although a bit far fetched, are within the bounds of credibility in the realm of thriller fiction. “The Day It Happened” becomes a compelling read up until the last couple of pages. Unfortunately, the conclusion of the story goes considerably off track. Instead of some final event occurring to provide dramatic closure, the story simply ends. Further, before that, the author rushes through the couple of previous pages that take Miranda from being out in the cold to the position in which she presumably finds herself at the beginning of the first full-length book in the series. In fact, the story ends with the author posing several questions (presumably to readers), then stating that readers can find out the answers in the later, longer books. Even though the ending isn’t a traditional cliffhanger, the style of writing resembles that of 40’s movie serials. “The Day It Happened” is short, listed as 23 pages in its Amazon blurb, with the actual story taking up about 60% of that total (with the balance including an excerpt from Miranda’s first novel). Since the story is offered free, I can’t complain about receiving value for the money. But the description of this work as a “short story” is off, and this doesn’t feel quite right as a standalone work. My hunch is that this story may well be an excerpt from a novel that was edited out for pacing purposes. In any event, while it shows a good bit of authorial quality, it also needed some more editing before it could be considered a really good story on its own. December 17, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Oak, Park IL. Miranda Groth was blessed with a new baby Amy. Leon let her know it was her job to take care of the child. She had put the child up for adoption. 1 day he threw her suitcase in the front lawn dragged her down the stairs & threw her out onto the porch. Miranda found a job at a construction site. She went back to her maiden name Miranda Steele. I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one. A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written mystery (short story) book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great mystery movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. A very easy rating of 5 stars. Thank you for the free author; Felicity Books; Amazon Digital Services LLC. ; book Tony Parsons MSW (Washburn) June 12, 2013 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase This "book" represents one of my pet peeves. The cover of the book with an empty cradle is very engaging. The story, which is very short, begins with a mother who is searching in her home for her missing baby and learns the baby was given away by her husband. So she begins searching for her daughter. And then the book ends. Oh, yeah, if you want to know if she finds her baby you can buy book 2 in the series, but you still won't know because you also have to buy books 3, 4, and 5. But you STILL won't know because book 6, which may or may not be the final book, comes out this fall (fall of 2013). So a book you thought was "free" will end up costing you at least $10 and that's without adding in book 6, which of course is not out yet and so is not priced yet. Don't even bother... There are many books that I think are "keepers" but this one I think is a "skipper". June 20, 2014 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase This was just the story that introduces the character and sets the tone for "Someone Else's Daughter. " Miranda was raped and impregnated. After having a daughter and wanting to keep her, her a-hole cop husband forges her signature and releases her daughter to a closed adoption. Then he throws her out into the snow. This begins the Miranda's Rights series that sends the heroine on a quest to find her child and to never be abused again. It was well written, and the concept is great. It was disappointing that it was so short. This is a trend now with authors, but I think it should say, "Introduction to Someone Else's Daughter. " If you are up front with what you are trying to do, the readers will respond better. Still, I liked it, and I will read on. So tragic, so sad, so unforgivable. August 20, 2016 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase I got this to read before starting the other books in the series - glad it was free. It's depressing, as are many similar real life stories. It doesn't offer any hope of a brighter future, which is also true of many people's lives. But I read for pleasure & relaxation. If I wanted to read about things like this I'd read the newspaper, or just skip reading & watch the news on TV, or better yet, just knit or color or something else creative. Maybe even clean house & do the laundry. You get the picture, it's very depressing, but thankfully, short. There are 141 customer reviews and 150 customer ratings.

March 23, 2017 Format: Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase I loved this story! A must read for anyone of Irish descent, I learned a lot about my ancestor's struggles and it gave me some clues as to why they left their homeland to conquer the great unknown. March 25, 2012 Format: Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase You know right away that Uris is a skilled storyteller (and realize why his imitators fail). This novel is thickly written, as it must be to present the historical facts and the amount of sociological background that Uris does. I know from reading his other works that his research is painstaking and that he is able to get into the minds of various factions, to tell why they behave as they do. At times the historical/political complexities are hard to follow, but every account of Ireland's history has been that way for me. It is, after all, a long and complicated saga. Uris is a master of dialogue, among other things, so reading the lilting, musical Donegal speech is a pleasure. And of course the upper crust Brits are true to form as well. Uris clearly writes from the point of view of the Republicans, which is to say, the Irish who want their nation free of British rule. But he manages to populate his novel with quite a variety of points of view and does so without being impossibly biased. One must keep in mind that until the latter half of the twentieth century, most accounts of the struggle between the Irish and the English were written by the English... and there you WILL find bias. Trinity is a satisfyingly long read that kept me happy for a whole week of bedtime and escape-from-work reading. Be prepared that like Exodus, this is a heavy-weight. And so worth it! It was first published in the mid-seventies and surely passes the test of time. It is historical fiction dealing primarily with the situation in Northern Ireland - Ulster - which is the most complicated of the island's problems, and ends just prior to the Rising of 1916. Read and weep and learn. January 29, 2016 Format: Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase I first read this book about thirty-five years ago and I truly enjoyed doing so. I loved the Irish characters who were so rebellious, strong willed, loyal, firey and all who had deep routed feelings about the Prods and the Catholics. It is a sad but true story told in novel form. To me it represents all of the tales my Dad used to tell me about the "troubles. " I plan on re-reading this book shortly and I just know I will enjoy it as much as I did when I read it for the first time... February 22, 2018 Format: Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase Best book ever if you want to understand why the Irish think the way they do! Anyone of Irish ancestry owes it to themselves to read this book because you will then understand your DNA and where you come from. April 3, 2013 Format: Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase Leon Uris is a masterful writer. He writes with a passion and allows the story to flow through his characters with seeming ease, while engaging the reader to join their passion for faith, Ireland, history -past and future. The story is evolves through the eyes of the Irish and British people, government and churches, logic and magic mist of the past. Freedom of religion, love of the land and it's people are the core and you feel the absolute strength of both. The characters are strong and principled leaving the reader to feel the pain of decisions they must make giving up family, future and and even their life for the belief of an Ireland free from British control. Uris sheds light on their decision making through conversations and pulls the reader right along with the pain of giving up personal life for the cause- a Free Ireland. As Colin Larkin says, "I'm an Irishman and I've had enough! " The period of time is 1885-1914 and the struggle continued. There is real joy in finding a book so well written and powerful and leaves you wanting more but also needing to delve farther into the subject and learning about history, perhaps understanding what is happening in our present time. January 11, 2020 Format: Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase Awesome book. I read this about 30 years ago and am getting ready to read it again. It's a must read for all of Irish heritage and learn about the struggles, pain and fear that overwhelmed the people. A great read for those that really want to know the history of Ireland and its people. I can't wait for it to be delivered today. 😊 February 23, 2010 Format: Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase This book is one of my favorites of all times, it makes you laugh, cry, get angry, be sad and touches all of the rest of your emotions. Being of Irish decent and hearing the stories of my aunts and uncle when I was growing up I really enjoyed this book. Uris is the first person to tell the story of Ireland in a way that makes me understand some of the issues that caused the troubles in its violent past. You might come away hating the English, but you will also have some strong feelings about the Catholic Church. This is a big book and it tells a big story, basically it deals with one family and cover 2 generations during the late 1800s and early 1900s. I have read this 3 times and will probably pick it up again somewhere down the line. Once I start it I can't put it down even though it can make me very angry at the way the Irish were treated. I think this is a must read for anyone who wants to understand "the troubles" of Ireland. August 2, 2008 Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase I love to read. My dad would see me reading and say how it's one of the best things you can do in, life, the more you red the smarter you get. I'd always go for Stephen King, Jeffery Deaver, John Sanford... and such. My father would tell me that if I wanted to read a good book I should read 'Trinity', and learn about my ancestors. My father is half Irish. His grandparents came over during the potato famine. It's a great book if you want to learn how hard it was for your ancestors, when they had to leave their home and come to America. I finally got this 'Epic Novel' and I gotta say I love it. It was very moving. Every page drew me lin closer and closer. It's not the type of book I normaly read, but I am so glad I read it. The young boy that you meet at the beginging, you really start to see things through his eyes. I loved "seeing" how things were in that time period, the customs and hardships. In all, if you like learning about history, and/or you have any type of Irish blood in you, you have to read this book. Learn more about how things were for your Grandparents or Great-Gransparents and so on. There are 238 customer reviews and 254 customer ratings.
